Ilizarov surgery uses an external circular ring fixator attached to the bone through wires or pins. It corrects bone deformities, treats non-healing fractures, lengthens short limbs, and reconstructs bones destroyed by infection. The technique exploits the bone's natural ability to regenerate when slowly distracted (stretched). Developed by Soviet surgeon Dr. Gavriil Ilizarov in the 1950s, it is now the gold standard for complex bone and limb problems worldwide.

Ilizarov surgery can treat: non-union fractures (bones that have not healed), infected non-union (fractures with bone infection), limb length discrepancy, bone deformities (bow legs, knock knees, angular deformities), neglected CTEV (club foot in adults), bone defects after trauma or infection, deformities from polio or cerebral palsy, and complex ankle and foot reconstruction.

Duration depends on the condition. Simple deformity corrections may take 2–4 months. Limb lengthening of 4–6 cm typically takes 4–6 months. Bone transport for large defects (5–10 cm) may take 8–14 months. The frame is worn externally and patients make small daily adjustments at home. Progress is monitored with regular X-rays.

The surgery is performed under anaesthesia. After surgery, discomfort from pin sites and the fixator is managed with pain medication. During the distraction phase, patients experience a dull aching sensation that is usually well controlled. Most patients adapt quickly and can walk and perform daily activities with the frame in place.

Yes, limb lengthening is safe for adults. The procedure is routinely performed for leg length discrepancy, short stature due to bone conditions, and post-trauma shortening. Bone responds to gradual distraction at any age, though healing may take slightly longer in older adults. Dr. Verma will assess your suitability after reviewing your X-rays and medical history.

Bone transport is a specialised Ilizarov technique used when a segment of bone has been lost due to infection, trauma, or tumour removal. A cut is made in healthy bone nearby and that segment is gradually moved across the defect at 1 mm per day. As it moves, new bone forms in its wake, filling the gap without bone grafts or amputation.

Infected non-union occurs when a fracture fails to heal AND becomes infected. Dr. Vikas Verma treats it using Ilizarov: infected and dead bone is removed, the infection is cleared with antibiotics, and bone transport fills the resulting gap — often saving limbs that other surgeons have recommended amputating.

Frame removal is a minor procedure once X-rays confirm solid bone healing. A short period of protected weight-bearing and physiotherapy follows. Most patients return to normal activities within a few weeks. International patients receive a follow-up protocol for their home doctors, and remote follow-up via WhatsApp is available.
